A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF A HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE ORGANISATION

Directed and produced by Symon Lord

‘A Week in the life of a Humanitarian Assistance Organization’ seeks to show how a humanitarian and or/ developmental assistance organization operates. Individual agencies of the UN and international charities provide both humanitarian assistance in the aftermath of wars and natural disasters and developmental assistance to help relatively poor countries to help build their economies, civil society and systems of Government.

The operations of these international organization are ultimately paid for by international tax payers and by donations from the general public, yet how many of the people who fund them know their money is channeled into action?

This film is an informational and educational one which fills that knowledge gap.

The film chooses the scenario ‘A Week in the Life of’ and from Monday morning to Friday afternoon profiles individual projects of the UN Refugee Agency in Azerbaijan for whom the author of the film was working prior to making the film. The projects are fairly typical of ones run by this type of international organization, and include: Human rights, gender, medical assistance, community development, income generation activities, education and distribution of humanitarian assistance.

In this way, the film seeks to be ‘case study’ or representation of how a similar organization would operate anywhere in the World.

The film tries to be as representative as possible of different individuals involved in the projects. This means that the film tries to strike a balance for gender, age groups, staff of UNHCR and implementing partners of different levels and for ‘project beneficiaries’ , those people who benefit from the projects. In this case the project beneficiaries are refugees and internally displaced persons.

This is the first film of Symon Lord who previously worked as a teacher and then in project management with the UN and international charities. He is currently working on a film about labour migration from Tajikistan in Central Asia to Russia, which is more of an investigative, analytical, character-based documentary than an informational, educational film.
