TRIBUTE TO GARY GRAVERS (Total Duration 60mn)
Burbank 91505
Tribute to Gary Graver
The premiere of Veronique Isoardi-Morales’ short Chance Encounter will be preceded by a tribute to its cameraman, the late Gary Graver.
Except for the excerpt from the Orson Welles tribute at the Directors Guild and the photos of Gary shooting his last film, which appear at the end, all the excerpts used in the tribute were filmed by Gary Graver.
Scenes when he speaks to the camera come from his 1993 film Working with Orson Welles, which is also the source for excerpts from two early films by Gary — The Embracers and Beggars Will Ride — and the excerpts from Welles’ last completed film, Filming Othello.
The “Car in the Rain” excerpt from The Other Side of the Wind: This still uncompleted film is supposed to be composed of scenes from a film-within-the-film by Hollywood veteran Jake Hannaford (John Huston), who is trying to complete a film in the style of the period (the early 70s), and bits of film shot by students from the American Film Institute at Jake’s birthday party, which ends catastrophically. The story is told through an assemblage of these hypothetical fragments (all directed by Welles, of course) that will be released in a form resembling a rough cut, complete with “Scene Missing” cards. “The Car in the Rain” is supposedly part of Jake Hannaford’s “work-in-progress.”
The F for Fake Trailer: Welles and Graver shot this trailer after completing F for Fake, Welles’ meditation on art and forgery using excerpts from a documentary about supreme faker Elmyr de Hory by Francois Reichenbach, filmed when Clifford Irving was interviewing de Hory for his biography Fake. Irving himself later hoaxed the world with a fake autobiography of Howard Hughes. This suggested to Welles the theme of his film. The F for Fake Trailer is a separate, self-contained short film that would have been lost if Gary Graver had not preserved the black-and-white work print. The color restoration being shown here was done by the Stefan Droessler, director of the Munich Film Archives, the foremost center for preserving and restoring Welles’ work.
“The Garden Fragment” from The Dreamers: Welles filmed the Isaac Dinesen short story The Immortal Story in the 60s and wrote a script at the beginning of the 80s for an ambitious feature based on two of her stories, The Dreamers and Echoes, about Pellegrina, a great opera singer who decides, after losing her voice, to shed her identity and wander the earth. In 1982 Welles and Graver filmed scenes from the proposed film in the garden of the home Welles shared with Oja Kodar in Hollywood. The scene known as “The Garden Fragment” shows Pellegrina (Kodar) explaining her plan to Marcus (played by Welles, seen only as a silhouette), a wealthy man who has always been her greatest admirer, as she prepares to embark on her travels.
